Note:  Historical: Joseph Story served as the first president of Mount Auburn Cemetery until his death. In his honor the trustees of Mount Auburn commissioned a commemorative sculpture from his son William Wetmore Story to be paid by public subscription. More than 40 subscribers came forward to fund the work raising nearly $4000. Story signed a contract in 1847 specifying that he would complete the statue within five years. He then moved to Rome to learn the art of sculpture. Story did not complete the sculpture in time for the 1851 deadline and the original contract was annulled and a new contract was drawn up. The completed marble statute was shipped to Boston in 1855 and the trustees of Mount Auburn unanimously accepted it at their meeting June 1, 1855.

Subject: Born September 18, 1779, in Marblehead, Massachusetts, the son of Elisha Story and Mehitable Pedrick. Studied at Marblehead Academy until 1794, graduated from Harvard in 1798, and studied law under Samuel Putnam and Chief Justice Samuel Sewall. Story was admitted to the bar in 1801 and practiced in Salem, Massachusetts. Sworn in to the United States Supreme Court in 1811, a position he remained in until his death. Served as Dane Professor of Law at Harvard Law School from 1829-1845. Died September 10, 1845, in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
