General: Title from exhibition caption. Original glass negative in Israel Museum, Jerusalem. Historical: Mendel John Diness (1827-1900), a Jewish watchmaker, arrived in Jerusalem in 1848 and converted to Christianity a year later. Unable to continue working as a watchmaker, he studied photography under Scottish missionary James Graham in 1856 and became the first resident photographer in Jerusalem. Faced with increased competition from other photographers arriving in the city, Diness emigrated to the United States in 1860. He changed his name to Mendenhall John Dennis and operated a photography studio in Cincinnati until 1867 but was unsuccessful. He went on to become a lecturer and evangelical minister. John Barnier, an American photographer who specializes in historical photographic processes, discovered Diness's original glass negatives in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1989. He was later commissioned to develop the photographic prints used in the "Capturing the Holy Land" exhibition. |
