Note: | General: Title from typescript note on the back of photograph mount. Historical: From typescript note on back of photograph mount transcribed from photograph verso before mounting: "The missionaries erected an awning, hung it with American flags, laid a board floor and served Roosevelt, Kermit and two others of the hunting party with an al fresco luncheon such as that part of Africa never saw before. The "X" marks Roosevelt at table. Roosevelt visited the mission while en route to the Sotik district, after having broken all records on the Kapiti plains. Roosevelt made a speech at the luncheon in which he said, 'I am immensely interested in this country and its possibilities as an abode for white men. Very large tracts are fit for a fine population and healthy and properous settlements, and it would be a calamity to neglect them. I am convinced that this country has a great agricultural and industrial future, and it is the most attractive playground in the world. It most certainly should be excellent openings for capitalists and ample ind[u]cements should be offered them to come here. The home-maker and actual settler, and not the speculator, should be encouraged in making this a white man's country. It is natural that I should have a peculiarly good feeling for the settlers. they remind me of the white men in our west, with whom I worked and with whose aspirations I so sympathize.' (This occurred in June, if the date is of any consequence. Roosevelt agreed to return a month later and lay the cornerstone for a new mission building.)" |

Note: | General: Title from typescript note on the back of photograph mount. Historical: From typescript note on back of photograph mount: "Lion modelled from skin brought from Africa by the late Col. Roosevelt to be used as a memorial: When the late Col. Theodore Roosevelt returned from his famous Africa trip he brought with him among many things the skin of a lion which he killed in the wilds of Africa. The skin is now being used as a model for a lion cast which when completed will be covered with the skin and presented to the Roosevelt Memorial Association of New York. W. R. Brown, chief taxidermist of the U.S. Smithsonian Museum in Washington is at work on the model in the Lion House of the National Zoological Park. The method of preparing a skin for exhibition purposes is a great improvement on the old stuffing process. The cast first being made from a life pose and the skin then fastened over the model." |
