General: Title supplied by cataloger. Photographs are arranged by number on photograph mount. Photograph number G. 119. follows after G. 184. Those photographs with a number begining "(L)" (241-279 in collection order) are possibly taken by J. Alden Loring. Titles are taken chiefly from typescript notes on photograph mounts. The bulk of the photographs were taken by Kermit Roosevelt; where other photographers are ascribed, it has been noted in the individual records. Access to original material is restricted because of condition. Consultation requires permission of the collection curator. Historical: Theodore Roosevelt traveled to Africa for a year-long safari, 1909 April-1910 March. He spent the bulk of his time traveling in British East Africa (now Kenya) and the Belgian Congo (now Democratic Republic of the Congo). His chief aim was to acquire specimens for the Smithsonian and the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Kermit Roosevelt was the official photographer for the safari.
Production: Cataloging and imaging funded by the Ratus Lee Kelly Fund for Houghton Library.
Provenance: Gift of the Theodore Roosevelt (then Roosevelt Memorial) Association, 1943, unless otherwise noted in individual image records. Given to the Roosevelt Memorial Association by Scribner's.
