Historical: On December 21, 1894, Ed Severson was killed at the ranch of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Wadsworth, on the Little Missouri River near Medora (N.D.). The Wadsworths claimed innocence, but a 15 year old boy in their employ, Fred Roehm, confessed that Wadsworth had paid him to shoot Severson, and was present at the killing. Fred Roehm pleaded guilty to the murder and on March 28, 1895 he was sentenced to a term in reform school at Plankinton, South Dakota. The Wadsworths were granted a change of venue for their trial, which was moved to Bismarck (N.D.), in Burleigh County. The Wadsworths provided each other with alibis and on December 21, 1895, the jury returned a verdict of not guilty. Medora residents were outraged and accused the couple of buying off the jury. Shelfmark TRC-PH-2
Work Type:  photographs
Date:  1895
Description:  The Wadsworth jury hung in effigy in front of the Hotel de Mores, Medora (N.D.).
Dimensions:  9 x 11 centimeters
Associated Name:  Wadsworth, Mark, associated name
Location:  Subject: Medora, North Dakota, United States
Topics:  effigies; hanging

General: Title supplied by cataloger. The manuscript historical note on the back of the photograph mount is inaccurate.
The Bismarck jury was hung in effigy from a tree in front of the Hotel de Mores along with a banner that read, "Billings Co.'s compliments to Burleigh Co. thugs and packed juries. Burleigh County the banner county of thugs. To the Jurors...et al, how much did you get? You poor fools, may you roast in hell. Hutch, how man false oaths did you take...the jury. You pimps and cowards."
