Historical: "The snapshot was made on July 12, before Santiago, the morning following a really big rain, the worst we saw in Cuba. It so happened that our regiment--the First Illinois Volunteer Infantry, having reached the front lines on the morning of the 11th of July, was placed on the right of Teddy and his Rough Riders. There being a lull in the firing, Col. Roosevelt visited our Colonel, to offer assistance if such were needed. Col. Henry L. Turner--in command of the 1st Ill. was, at that time, endeavoring to dry his shoes and stockings, and Teddy caught him barefooted and--as the print shows. Later that morning came, from Teddy, several cases of Hardtack for use as Col. Turner saw fit; and because we were then on very short rations, it no doubt, was used to a good advantage." Taken from a typescript transcription of a letter written by Cary T. Ray, dated 1949 January 12, found on the back of the photomount of a duplicate of this image housed under the shelfmark TR-PH-1.
