Historical: The Sylph, a converted yacht, was purchased 1898 June from John Roach & Co., Chester, Pa.; and commissioned 1898 August 18 at the Norfolk Navy Yard. The Sylph served as a yacht for the President of the United States and other high officials. Beginning in 1902, she shared this duty with the Mayflower.
