Historical: The Sylph, a converted yacht, was purchased 1898 June from John Roach & Co., Chester, Pa.; and commissioned 1898 August 18 at the Norfolk Navy Yard. The Sylph served as a yacht for the President of the United States and other high officials. Beginning in 1902, she shared this duty with the Mayflower. This photograph was probably taken when Theodore Roosevelt traveled aboard the Sylph from Bridgeport, Conn. to Oyster Bay.
